The Story of Mattila

The home of Matti and Aune

My great-grandfather Juho Impiö, known among friends as ‘Mursun Jussi’, built the house as a first home for his newly married son Matti and his young wife Aune (pictured) — my grandparents. Naturally, the house was named Mattila after the young master of the house. The ground floor was designed to house a shop for the Suur-Lappi Cooperative. Upstairs, space was reserved for a kitchen and a room for the shopkeeper’s family, as well as bedrooms in case customers arriving from across Lake Simojärvi by boat or horse wished to stay overnight during their shopping trips.

However, the guesthouse was never needed, as a road was built to the other side of the lake and access became easier. Over the decades, the rooms have instead been filled with Aune and Matti’s children, grandchildren, and guests.

After a few quieter years, Mattila is coming back to life and, with its new owner, is now opening its doors as a guesthouse.

Hi, I'm Tintti!

Welcome to my home at Mattila! Mattila was my beloved grandparents’ home in Impiö, where I spent the best summer holidays and Christmases of my life. I moved to Mattila with my family when I started upper secondary school in Ranua. At that time, the house was shared in harmony by my grandmother Aune, my aunt Sirpa, and me, together with my mother, father, and two younger sisters. Those years rooted me deeply in the soil of Impiö. More than twenty years passed while I studied, lived, and worked in different parts of Finland with my own family. The dream of returning to my roots had been growing for a long time, but finally, in 2025, the right moment came. It was my turn to step through Mattila’s door as its owner and continue in the footsteps of my grandparents.

I offer guests the opportunity to stay in a homely, cozy house and enjoy the natural beauty of the peaceful yet lively village of Impiö, nestled among lakes. I’m happy to share stories about my home village, for example over breakfast.

If you’d like to get a feel for Mattila’s atmosphere in advance, you can find texts and reflections I’ve written on the blog.
